Planting Instructions
1. Choose the right size pot. The reason this is important is simply because plants grow quickly, it's good for the roots to be able to absorb all available moisture to prevent unused compost becoming sour. Clay pots will give you better results as they are porous, but these days plastic is cheaper and more widely available and perfectly suitable, plus they are easier to clean which must be done before re-use each spring to prevent the eggs and spores of any pests and diseases from hatching into your grow room and killing your plants. For these plants we recommend 9cm pots. We would also recommend a pot tray to keep them all together, see listing pictures.
2. Choose a good quality potting compost (Not multipurpose and never use garden soil.) We can supply professional grade compost, as used by ourselves, please contact for cost and quantity.
3. Fill pots with quality compost. Break it up in your fingers to remove any lumps and get some air into it (similar to baking a cake! ) Do not compact compost. One of the biggest mistake made is to firm it down, as this squeezes all of the air out.
4. Make planting hole using a dibber or blunt end of pencil or pen to gently create a hole the right size for plug to fit into ensuring the top of plug is the same level as the rest of compost.
5. Gently lower the plant into its planting hole (hold the leaf of plant and not the stem) and gently fill around plug with compost using your dibber or pencil, and water in using a watering can with fine rose nozzle to help protect plants and retain the air.
6. Growing on. Provide good light and sunshine with frost free conditions. It's best to aim for a minimum of 5 degrees Celsius. Wait for compost to start to look dry on the surface in between watering, never let it go completely dry or waterlogged as they need water and air in the compost to be readily available. Good quality potting compost is designed to help achieve this. Do not at anytime during this stage use any plant food the compost will contain enough balanced fertiliser for six weeks and by this time your plant will have grown enough to be replanted in fresh compost.
7. Planting out. After 3 to 6 weeks you will see roots coming from the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. Once this occurs you know its ready to move your plant into its final planting position. If you plan to grow in containers please choose a specialised container compost and again, do not feed for first 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, start feeding with a liquid fertiliser and follow manufacturers guidelines. If you would like to plant into open ground, dig some multi-purpose compost into your planting site at the rate of half compost half garden soil in top 5 inches. Keep the area weed free, and water and feed regularly.
Delivery
We offer free delivery on all purchases, no minimum spend! All plants are dispatched on the day of purchase, excluding bank holidays and weekends. This means they can arrive the next day, although we can't guarantee this. Therefore it is important to ensure that someone is available to accept the delivery, as some items will require a signature, or some may not fit through your letterbox. If you unable to accept your delivery, leave a note out saying you are happy for your items to be left in a safe place or delivered to a neighbour. In the unlikely event that your plants have not arrived, the first thing you should do is check at your local post office or speak to your local postman as cards are sometimes not left.
